Why The Washington Wizards Do The Deal

The Washington Wizards could justify this deal from a few angles.

Firstly, Hachimura overlaps with the younger, more productive Deni Avdija. They’re both wings with a similar physical profile, and neither of them is knock-down three-point shooters at this point. Meanwhile, Avdija has emerged as a high-end defender, whereas Hachimura has failed to establish a signature skill at this point.

Moreover, as we established, the Wizards are in win-now mode whether they ought to be or not. Extending Beal may make him difficult to trade. Granted, he’s a great player, but the deal is enormous. Barring a direct request from Beal himself, it feels like a long-term commitment to him.

If it is, the Wizards may as well field the best roster they can in 2022-23. Acquiring Conley helps them do so. He’s an elite floor-spacer, smart decision maker and all-around floor-raiser.
