In the NBA, there are some commonly accepted truisms. With that said, sometimes, teams benefit from questioning them.

For example, most would agree that two scoring guards shouldn’t share a backcourt. It’s normally assumed that one of your guards should be a natural distributor. This is a way to achieve floor balance.

It’s also generally assumed that a rebuilding team shouldn’t go all-in on win-now moves. Most would prefer them to stay the course, collecting young players and draft capital until those young players start to win on their own. That’s the time, goes the argument, to switch gears.

If the Houston Rockets acquired Donovan Mitchell this summer, they’d be defying both of those pieces of conventional wisdom.
