Warriors’ Last-Minute Recruiting Pitch Pushed JaMychal Green

Earlier this NBA offseason, JaMychal Green was traded by the Denver Nuggets to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The trade had barely become official when Green knew that he would be heading to another city, as the rebuilding Thunder had no intention of keeping him; they planned to move him to another team where the fit would be better.

While on vacation in Jamaica, Green had an idea of where he would be continuing his NBA career. Despite his struggles shooting the ball last season, as he made only 26.6 percent of his 3-point attempts, there was a market for him.

However, at the last minute, his mind was changed after a phone call. Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors, reached out to Green while he was on vacation. Green now had a new plan and that was heading out west to join the defending champions.

“He told me that [the Warriors] were interested, that they wanted me here, wanted me to be a part of the program,” Green said. “After talking to him, I couldn’t tell him no. The organization and what they built over here, I’d love to be a part of it.”

After finishing up the call with Kerr, he made one to Draymond Green. JaMychal and Draymond have known each other since eighth grade when they were playing AAU basketball.

Pitching Golden State to people is nothing new for Draymond, who has been doing it for years. But, the call with JaMychal wasn’t so much as a pitch to join the team, but an affirmation of what Kerr had said.

“He was just excited,” JaMychal Green said. “We both know what we bring to the table, and we just had a good conversation about everything and he made it easy for me to come here.”

JaMychal will be filling an important role in the Warriors’ rotation for the 2022-23 season. Otto Porter Jr. and Nemanja Bjelica both departed this offseason, as Porter signed with the Toronto Raptors and Bjelica is heading back overseas.

There are minutes available in the frontcourt, as both were key contributors during the 2021-22 season. JaMychal knows what will be asked of him and he is ready to help the team in any way that they need.

“Just come in and play hard,” he said. “Be a dog. Do the dirty work — help Draymond out with the dirty work. Knock down shots and play defense. I feel like if you come here and handle your business, you set yourself up for life.”

Turning things around from the perimeter will be key for Green. Part of the reason that his 3-point shooting went so well off last season was that he dealt with a nagging wrist injury. He seemingly lost confidence, as he was no longer even attempting shots at one point.

“Toward the end of the season I just stopped shooting, period. It’s all about rest and confidence,” Green said. “As long as I get my reps in this summer, I’ll be good to go. I was just fighting through some things last year… it’s going to get up.”

Floor spacing is key to the Warriors’ game plan, but he will be asked to do more than just that. JaMychal Green could also be called upon to play some minutes at the center spot behind Kevon Looney. His role could expand at the five spot, even more, depending on how James Wiseman looks in the early going.
