For that matter, it makes sense whether they’re trading for Donovan Mitchell or not. If they are, this trade will help them recollect some of the assets they’ll have parted with in order to land him.

On the other hand, if they’re not, they’ll have a tremendous collection of assets following this deal. Mainly, they’ll be adding a draft pick to one of the league’s best collections. Still, with Bagley’s improving performance as 2021-22 wore on, he could be an additional asset as well.

In any event, the Knicks might as well make rebuilding decisions following a disappointing 2021-22 season. Getting off of Randle’s contract is its own benefit. If nothing else, this deal frees up room for a star acquisition.
