Why The Detroit Pistons Do The Deal
Granted, Julius Randle’s fit with the Detroit Pistons depends on which version of Randle they’re receiving.
After all, we’ve seen two very different Julius Randles over the past two seasons. In 2020-21, Randle was one of the best floor-spacers in the NBA. If that version came to Detriot, his secondary ball-handling and playmaking will complement Cunningham nicely.
On the other hand, if Randle shoots as he does in 2021-22, it’ll be a disaster. If he doesn’t provide a spacing upgrade over Bagley III, he won’t be worth the cost the Pistons are paying here.
We’d argue that it’s worth rolling the dice. Randle has an All-NBA pedigree. He may never reach his 2020-21 heights again, but it feels likely that he’ll at least split the difference next season.
