Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
It’s widely assumed that the Brooklyn Nets will strive to field a competitive team in 2022-23. After all, they owe their draft picks, whether outright or via swap, to the Houston Rockets through to 2027.
Having said that, maybe that shouldn’t be their driving principle in assessing Durant deals. One could argue that Brooklyn should be focused on getting the best value, period. They may not do much better than this.
Furthermore, they should be at least solid next year following this deal. Even if we assume that Irving departs in a different transaction, they’ll have some interesting pieces left over here. Ben Simmons and Mikal Bridges should make for one of the very best defensive duos in the league.
More importantly, the Nets are receiving a tremendous haul of draft capital here. Not only that, but it’s coming from a team that will be heavily reliant on a 37-year-old Paul and a 33-year-old Durant.
