Kevin Durant’s trade request was a seismic event that shook the entire NBA. It feels like the world has stood still since he issued it.

For a while, it felt like his departure to the Phoenix Suns was an inevitability. Basketball-wise, the fit between Durant, Devin Booker, and Chris Paul was always obvious. Such a trio would surely contend for the NBA championship in 2022-23.

Unfortunately for the Suns, the likelihood of landing Durant this summer has lessened. When the Suns matched the max offer sheet the Pacers offered Deandre Ayton, they took one of their best trade chips off the table.

Now, Ayton can’t be traded until January 15. A Durant deal may be less likely now, but we wouldn’t call it impossible.
