Utah Jazz Receive: G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Oklahoma City Thunder Receive: G Donovan Mitchell
Balancing an NBA roster is a challenge. It’s not as simple as accumulating as much talent as possible. The pieces have to fit.
Deciding whether they can down the line is an even more significant challenge. Players with overlapping strengths can often co-exist, but they may not maximize each other. Moreover, players with overlapping weaknesses will fail to work together.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey decidedly have overlapping strengths. They’re both oversized point guards who can work magic with the ball in their hands. It’s harder to say whether they have overlapping weaknesses, due to SGA’s inconsistent three-point accuracy.
On the other hand, Giddey and Mitchell fit like a glove. Mitchell’s off-ball gravity is far more significant than Gilgeous-Alexander’s. Having just added Chet Holmgren in the NBA draft, the Oklahoma City Thunder may decide that they’re ready to put together a team that fits together.
