Why The Indiana Pacers Do The Deal
The Indiana Pacers are rebuilding. For that reason, getting a first-round pick for Turner is inherently a good decision.
A specific look at their roster further justifies the move. Isaiah Jackson emerged as a high-potential player during his 2021-22 rookie campaign. He’s a center. Furthermore, the Pacers just recommitted to the 22-year-old Jalen Smith. He’s slated to start at the power forward position, but he’ll need reps at center as well.
That’s starting to look like a logjam. Moving Turner would make room for the younger players in the rotation. Moreover, he may not feel so comfortable as a Pacer anymore.
After all, this club just tendered a max rookie extension offer to Deandre Ayton. The Suns matched it, but Turner now knows, on no uncertain terms, that the team was willing to replace him.
