Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal
The Boston Celtics are, again, fresh off of an NBA Finals appearance. Many would make the case that they shouldn’t make any moves this summer.
Any more moves, that is. The Celtics already traded for Malcolm Brogdon. Furthermore, they did so to address a weakness that the Warriors exposed in the Finals – a dearth of ball-handling.
Having said that, this deal addresses that issue in surplus. In fact, it leaves Boston with a crowded guard rotation between Mitchell, Brogdon, Marcus Smart, and Derrick White. In all likelihood, the Celtics would have to move White in a separate transaction.
If they could, everything else adds up here. The Celtics would likely start a backcourt duo of Smart and Mitchell. That’s a great pairing: Smart makes up for Mitchell’s defensive shortcomings as much as Mitchell covers for Smart’s offensive limitations.

Meanwhile, Brogdon will likely be in the running for the Sixth Man of the Year award. If Boston sees that as a winning formula, they should consider pulling the trigger on this deal.
