Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
Recent reports have suggested that the Jazz are looking for seven unprotected first-round picks for Mitchell. That makes sense. Their General Manager Danny Ainge is known for coveting draft selections.
In fact, Ainge was the engineer of the deal that, in 2013, sent Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Brooklyn Nets for a package that was primarily built around three first-round picks and a swap. Honestly, just talking about that deal makes us feel old:
“Back in my day, you could get two Hall-of-Famers for just three picks!”.
Inflation, right? In any event, Ainge probably won’t get seven first-rounders for Mitchell. On the other hand, he could get a potential star player in Herro to go with three first-round selections. That’s still a pretty good haul. Between this and the Gobert trade, he’d have brought in seven first-rounders this summer.

In addition, of course, to a player who’ll probably be better than the vast majority of the players he could draft. With that said, is Mitchell enough of an upgrade over Herro to justify parting with those picks?
