The Houston Rockets have continued purging their roster of veteran players this NBA offseason. Before the draft, they traded Christian Wood to the Dallas Mavericks for Boban Marjanovic, Sterling Brown, Trey Burke, Marquese Chriss and the Mavericks’ 2022 first-round pick, No. 26 overall.
Shortly after that, the John Wall saga came to an end. The two sides agreed to a buyout, making Wall a free agent after he cleared waivers. He is heading out west, agreeing to a deal with the LA Clippers, who were a rumored landing spot for months.
The only veteran remaining on the roster is Eric Gordon, who has been involved in a ton of trade rumors. He was almost dealt during the 2022 NBA Draft, but the Rockets turned down every deal despite them all including a first-round pick.
If Gordon was on the move, it would leave the Rockets with a very young team. The oldest player in the rotation would likely be 26-year-old Jae’Sean Tate. But, that is likely something Houston management would be okay with, as they are focused on developing their young players.
One of the young players they are happy with so far is Kevin Porter Jr. Porter was a first-round pick of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019 but didn’t last too long with the team. After a few incidents, he was traded to the Rockets for a future second-round pick.
He has been deployed in a different manner in Houston, as he has handled the starting point guard role. The results have been mixed, but he has shown improvements, which is key. He may never be an upper echelon point guard, but he is a capable playmaker.
Eligible for a rookie extension this summer, Porter and the Rockets are on the same page. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, both sides have a mutual interest in working out an extension before the season gets underway.
The USC product had solid counting stats last season, averaging 15.6 points, 6.2 assists and 4.4 rebounds in 31.3 minutes per game. He also knocked down a career-high 37.5 percent of his 3-point attempts.
Still only 22 years old, there is plenty of unlocked potential for Kevin Porter Jr. to tap into. He is hoping to continue developing it in Houston and the Rockets are hoping that he sticks around. With motivation on both sides to get a deal done, one should come together before the deadline, which is the first day of the regular season.
