Philadelphia 76ers Receive: C Jakob Poeltl, F Doug McDermott, G/F Josh Richardson
San Antonio Spurs Receive: F Tobias Harris, 2029 First-Round Pick (PHI)
Paradoxically, this San Antonio Spurs trade has the Philadelphia 76ers improving by arguably trading the best player involved in the deal. Tobias Harris is a quality player. He’s flirted with All-Star status throughout his career. He’s also overpaid.
That’s actually not a concern for the Sixers. With their focus solely on the 2022-23 season, they don’t need to worry about their future cap sheet.
At the same time, this San Antonio Spurs trade probably makes them better. It certainly upgrades their depth. Poeltl will probably be the best backup big in the NBA, and crucially, will allow Embiid some much-needed regular season rest.
Meanwhile, McDermott is one of the league’s most reliable floor-spacers as he’s continued to show with the Spurs, while Josh Richardson has a solid 3-and-D skillset.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs aren’t concerned with Harris’ big contract for the opposite reason as the Sixers – they won’t be ready to contend until some time after it expires.
