Coby White Emerging As Trade Candidate Amid Contract Talks

Coby White, Chicago Bulls, NBA Trade Rumors

The Chicago Bulls came into the offseason looking to add some depth to their roster. They made major changes leading up to the 2021-22 NBA season, but injuries ultimately derailed the team from having any real success.

Veteran depth has been found as they signed Andre Drummond at the center position and Goran Dragic at the point guard spot. However, there could be more moves on the horizon for Chicago.

One of them could very involve combo guard Coby White.

The Bulls were attempting to package White with the No. 18 overall pick earlier in the offseason to see what kind of value they could receive in return via trade. While nothing came to fruition at the time, there is a chance that White could still eventually be on the move.

According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, White and the Bulls aren’t very close on a contract extension. White, who was selected seventh overall in 2019, is eligible for a rookie extension this offseason. The deadline to sign an extension is the first day of the regular season, and it sounds as if that date will come and go without an extension being agreed to.

It appears unlikely White will find an extension prior to the fall. Perhaps if White can continue to flash the shooting stroke that cemented his spot in Chicago’s rotation, elevated defense and greater playmaking, a rival team will look to acquire White at the deadline, eager for the chance to pay him next offseason.

White improved his 3-point shooting last season as well, knocking down 38.5 percent of his 3-point attempts. For his career, he is now up to 36.5 percent, as he is becoming someone that opposing defenses have to respect on the perimeter.

Standing 6’5”, Coby White has the size to defend both backcourt positions, providing the Bulls or whichever team acquires him some positional versatility. His offense is his best asset, so if he continues making strides on defense, it will result in a bigger payday on his extension.
