The Boston Celtics had as impressive of an NBA postseason run as any team in recent memory. While they didn’t win the Larry O’Brien Trophy, as they were defeated in six games by the Golden State Warriors, they showed just how good they are with the path they had to take just to make it that far.
In the first round, the Celtics drew the Brooklyn Nets, who were a popular pick as a team capable of pulling an upset. Boston handled them with ease, sweeping the Nets and earning a matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Celtics certainly caught a break with Khris Middleton now in the lineup, but it was still a hard-fought series. Defeating a team with Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t an easy feat but Boston accomplished it in seven games.
Another hard-fought seven-game series was on the horizon, this time against the No. 1 seed Miami Heat. The Celtics won Game 7 on the road in South Beach, showing their fortitude against a hard-nosed Heat team.
Losing in the NBA Finals certainly hurts, but this was still a successful season for the Celtics. In January they were hovering around .500 and looked destined for a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament before turning things up and becoming one of the best teams in the NBA.
LATEST NBA NEWS AND TRADE RUMORS: Grant Williams Has Bold Asking Price On Next Boston Celtics Contract
If you ask Grant Williams, he still believes that the Celtics are the best team in the league. He can say with confidence that the Warriors weren’t a better team, they were the more disciplined team and came away with the victory.
Williams could have a point, as a lot of analysts believe this was the least talented of the rosters that Golden State won a championship with. That won’t ease the pain of losing in the NBA Finals anymore, but it does make Williams’ comments about being the better team seem like it is more than just sour grapes.
While they may not have been the better team in Williams’ eyes, they were better when it counted most. At the end of the day, they added their fourth title in the last eight seasons while the Celtics are still chasing No. 18.
