The San Antonio Spurs are amidst a rebuilding effort after trading NBA All-Star Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks for a return focused on future draft capital.
Keldon Johnson and the Spurs agreed on a four-year, $80 million contract extension. He is set to earn just under $3.9 million in the final year of his current contract. He was set to reach restricted free agency next offseason had he not agreed to a contract extension.
Johnson, 22, is coming off a career year with averages of 17.0 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 39.8 percent from 3-point range. He has strongly outplayed the expectations bestowed upon him as the No. 29 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.
As a core member of a team, there’s a lot to like about how Johnson fits alongside top-flight talent. His output of 1.151 points per possession on spot-up plays was the best in the NBA among the five players who registered at least 400 attempts. Not only is he highly efficient, but he also maintains his execution even at a high volume.
