Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
The Brooklyn Nets do the deal to get a first-round pick for Kyrie Irving. That’s by far their main motivating factor here. Given his volatility, they’re lucky to get anything in return for him.
They also do it because they determine that this return is better than, say, Russell Westbrook and a pick. Alternatively, it might be better than Kyle Lowry and Duncan Robinson too.
The point is, the Nets’ options are uninspiring. Furthermore, they may find a use for these rotation players. After all, with their draft owing to the Houston Rockets through to 2027, they have little incentive to tank.
From that perspective, bringing in a slew of viable rotation pieces has some value. Assuming the Nets trade Kevin Durant for a younger, lesser star, this deal leaves that star with complementary players waiting.
