The Boston Celtics came into the offseason knowing that they had a strong roster. There wasn’t much tweaking that needed to be done after they won the Eastern Conference before losing to the Golden State Warriors in six games in the 2022 NBA Finals.

They have done a great job upgrading the roster without spending much thus far this offseason. Danilo Gallinari was signed to bolster the frontcourt after he was waived by the San Antonio Spurs. He was acquired by the Spurs in the Dejounte Murray trade from the Atlanta Hawks.

The Celtics made another solid move, acquiring Malcolm Brogdon from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith, Nik Stauskas, Malik Fitts, Juwan Morgan and a 2023 first-round pick. Brogdon is a nice upgrade for the Celtics’ backcourt as a two-way player.

He offers a complement to Marcus Smart at the point guard position along with Derrick White. Brogdon has the size and length to be a multi-positional defender as well, which makes him a good fit for the postseason over someone such as Payton Pritchard, who was undersized and targeted at times in the postseason.

There is a chance that Boston isn’t done making moves. While the trade with the Pacers was a lot of salary filler, Theis did get minutes in the postseason when Robert Williams III was sidelined.

A depth move could be on the horizon, and luckily for the Celtics, there are some players available that would provide good depth in the middle. One player they could target is Dwight Howard.

Howard is in the twilight of his career, but he has had a renaissance turning into a supporting role off the bench. He has played well for the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers when called upon, providing his teams with a presence on the interior with rebounding, shot-blocking and efficiency on offense.

For the veteran’s minimum, the Celtics can do worse than the steady Dwight Howard. He will produce well on a per-minute basis as a reserve and if pushed into a bigger role he is more than capable of handling it for a period of time.
