Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal

In continuing with our recent history lesson, another change besides injuries has negatively affected Anthony Davis’ career of late. That change was the Los Angeles Lakers’ acquisition of Russell Westbrook.

That’s not to put all the blame on Russell Westbrook. He and Anthony Davis simply don’t have compatible skill sets. Davis has had decent shooting seasons for a big man, but he’s most impactful around the key or in the dunker’s spot.

Unfortunately, Westbrook’s shooting woes are well-documented. That meant the Lakers’ spacing was atrocious in 2021-22. With the addition of Westbrook to this roster, Davis has become a bad fit.

Surely, the Lakers would prefer to trade Westbrook. Unfortunately, his value has plummeted. On the other hand, they should still be able to extract some value for Davis.

This deal does exactly that. It also nets them two players who do fit snugly alongside Westbrook. It may not be the ideal situation for the Lakers. Unfortunately, the ideal situation probably went out the window the moment they signed Westbrook.
