Mavericks, Sixers Unlikely To Trade For Nets’ Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving, Brooklyn Nets, NBA Trade Rumors

There is going to be a lot of fallout from Kevin Durant requesting a trade from the Brooklyn Nets right before NBA free agency got underway. The Nets are looking to cash in on a huge return package and the team acquiring him will become instant contenders.

But, Durant isn’t the only player that has been involved in trade rumors since his request. Kyrie Irving has also had his name circulating in trade rumors as everyone on the team could be had for the right deal.

Before opting into his contract for the 2022-23 season, Irving canvassed the league for a potential long-term contract opportunity. He was met with crickets, as the Nets called his bluff and they were right.

However, six teams were reported as potential landing spots for the mercurial point guard; the Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers. However, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, you can cross off at least two of those teams as Irving landing spots.

“Irving’s status is of course connected to Durant’s trade outcome as well, but his number of possible outcomes seems far fewer than Ayton’s. While the Mavericks and Sixers have been discussed as theoretical destinations for Irving, league sources contacted by B/R have strongly discounted Dallas and Philadelphia’s interest in the All-Star guard.”

Dallas needs another scoring guard after Jalen Brunson departed in free agency. He signed with the New York Knicks, which means you can take them off the list for Irving landing spots, too. The Clippers can also be removed as they signed John Wall following his buyout agreement with the Houston Rockets.

It was always hard to imagine the 76ers getting involved in negotiations for Irving as they already acquired James Harden from the Nets. Given how things reportedly fell out between the two, it would be hard to imagine teaming those two up again alongside Joel Embiid.

Miami is a team rumored to be looking to make a splash. They were one of Durant’s preferred landing spots, so they will likely focus on acquiring him first but Irving would be a fit as well. The Lakers would also love to acquire Irving, but that deal does have some hurdles they would have to get through.
