Some NBA players aren’t hard to put a financial value on. The LeBron James, Giannis Antetokoumpo, and Nikola Jokic’s of the world effectively write their own checks. You give them as much as you can, and move on.
Lesser players can be similarly simple to pay as well. Some guys are obvious Mid-Level Exception candidates. Some haven’t proven enough to earn more than a league minimum. On the other hand, some players’ contracts get a little more complicated.
Collin Sexton is one of those players. On the one hand, this is a player who averaged 24.3 points per game in 2020-21. His scoring abilities are beyond reproach.
On the other hand, questions about his health, playmaking, and defense persist. Sexton is immensely talented, but he has no track record in terms of playing winning basketball. He may be a suitable candidate for a one-year, “prove it” deal.
