Running an NBA team is tough. Nobody reasonable has ever claimed otherwise. Building a successful NBA franchise requires ingenuity, logic, and most of all, a lot of hard work.

Sometimes, general managers act too rashly. They may trade a star before they fully develop, or trade for a star that doesn’t fit with their team.

Other times, they’re too hesitant to act. Keeping a star player without having a proper supporting cast around them can depreciate his value. In that event, GMs are left wishing they’d moved on from their best player while they could still get fair value for him.

The Wizards are currently running the risk of falling into that category. They’ve clung to Bradley Beal for dear life. Now, they appear primed to commit a supermax extension to him despite having a roster that falls well short of contention.
