Why The Utah Jazz Make The Deal

Trading a superstar can be deceptively tricky. Teams can be hesitant to gut their roster. Landing a star without putting him in a position to contend can be counterproductive.

With that in mind, draft picks have become a more fashionable means for teams to trade for stars. They’ve become the NBA’s currency. From that point of view, the Utah Jazz may want more of them in a Mitchell deal.

On the other hand, Utah just landed considerable draft capital in their Gobert deal. If they wanted to focus on quality young players in a Mitchell deal, that would be logical. They’re landing them here.

Anunoby is already an elite 3-and-D wing, but he’s hinted at extra layers in his game. If they exist, he’d surely unearth them on a suddenly-depleted Jazz squad. Meanwhile, Gary Trent Jr. offers a similar skillset at the 2 spot.
