Cavaliers Not Intrigued By Mavericks’ Assets For Collin Sexton?

One of the better players still available to be signed in free agency is Collin Sexton of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The No. 8 overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft is a restricted free agent after not agreeing to a rookie extension before the deadline ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Sexton is a dynamic scoring guard who averaged 23.4 points per game during his last full season in 2020-21. He missed all but 11 games last season as he tore his meniscus, but he will be ready to go when this season kicks off.

He and the Cavaliers have been at a bit of a standstill when it comes to negotiations as there was a sizable gap between what Cleveland was willing to offer and what Sexton was seeking. His market thus far has been pretty cold, which is almost always the case for restricted free agents, but even more so now that the league is waiting to see what happens with Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets.

One of the teams that have been mentioned as a potential suitor for Collin Sexton is the Dallas Mavericks. They were showing some level of interest in him before Jalen Brunson departed in free agency for the New York Knicks, so the need has now increased.

However, the Dallas Mavericks are going to have to step their game up when it comes to sign-and-trade scenarios. On a recent episode of The Wind and Gold Talks podcast with Chris Fedor and Hayden Grove, it was revealed that the Cleveland Cavaliers are not intrigued by the pieces that Dallas is offering.

“They don’t have cap space. So it would have to be a sign-and-trade worked out with the Cavs. And I’m told that the Cavs are not very attracted to any of the pieces that Dallas would be willing to send back to them in a potential sign-and-trade.”

Depending on what kind of contract Sexton was signing for, the Dallas Mavericks could be offering players such as Dwight Powell, Reggie Bullock and Tim Hardaway Jr. Their package would certainly be veteran-laden as they don’t have a first-round draft pick until 2025 and Josh Green is the only on a rookie deal on the roster.

Dallas will likely have to get a third team involved if they are going to land Collin Sexton. They do not have the cap space to sign him outright and will have to get creative if they are to acquire him and meet the Cleveland Cavaliers’ asking price.
