Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
Many of the New York Knicks’ decisions lately have felt financially motivated. They seem to be perpetually monitoring their cap situation in case they’re in a position to sign (or trade for) a mega star.
This deal is no exception. They’re shedding Julius Randle’s long-term pact in exchange for Hayward’s substantially shorter one.
That may be their primary motive, but that’s not all they’re getting here. It’s hard to say whether the Hornets’ 2023 first-rounder will convey. In all likelihood, it’ll depend on the production they get from Julius Randle.
If he returns to his 2020-21 form, the Knicks just gained a first-round pick. There’s no way the Hornets will land in the draft’s top 10 with a tandem of peak Randle and LaMelo Ball. On the other hand, if he maintains his 2021-22 level, the Knicks traded him and Reddish for Gordon Hayward with this deal.
