The Boston Celtics had a strong 2021-22 NBA season. However, they fell just short of the ultimate goal, losing to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals in six games. The front office did not rest on their laurels, as they set out to improve the team to get over the hump next season.

They are the rumored landing spot for Danilo Gallinari once he becomes a free agent. Gallinari was traded by the Atlanta Hawks to the San Antonio Spurs earlier in the week in the Dejounte Murray blockbuster but the Spurs are waiving him. Once he clears waivers, he should be heading to Beantown.

They made another upgrade to the roster, this time to the backcourt, today. The Celtics have agreed to a trade with the Indiana Pacers, acquiring guard Malcolm Brogdon. The Pacers will receive Aaron Nesmith, Daniel Theis, Nick Stauskas, Malik Fitts, Juwan Morgan and a 2023 first-round pick.

This is a big upgrade for the Celtics as they are adding two bonafide rotation players to a team that just made the NBA Finals without sacrificing a single rotation player. Brogdon and Gallinari have had some issues staying healthy during their careers, but the Celtics just need them ready come playoff time.

Brogdon provides the team with another ball-handler to complement Marcus Smart. He is as comfortable playing on the ball as the lead playmaker as he is playing off the ball as a spot-up shooter and scorer.

Where Brogdon will help most is on the defensive end of the court where the Celtics were stingy but had some holes. Payton Pritchard was picked on at times in the postseason as teams targeted him in pick-and-rolls and switches. That will not be as big of an issue with the 6’5” Brogdon, who has a wingspan of 6’11”.

As for the Indiana Pacers, their goal of rebuilding continues. They add another first-round pick to the mix in 2023 and a former first-rounder in Aaron Nesmith that could find some minutes on the wing. Nesmith had yet to find his footing with the Boston Celtics but was regarded as arguably the best 3-point shooter in the 2020 draft class.
