No one man is an island. In the NBA, that’s particularly true. Not even Slovenian sensation Luka Doncic. He is, without question, one of the most talented offensive players in the NBA. He could still use a secondary ball-handler.
Throughout 2021-22, Jalen Brunson fulfilled that role for the Dallas Mavericks. To his credit, he fulfilled that role admirably. He emerged as a full-time starter and ended up offering playoff heroics in part of what resulted in a Western Conference Finals appearance.
So admirably, in fact, that he’s likely to play elsewhere next season. Brunson is receiving a massive payday from the New York Knicks this summer.
There was a lot of success achieved by the Mavericks with a secondary ball-handler paired with Doncic. Finding a replacement would be a wise avenue to take, even if the options are limited.
