The official start of NBA free agency is upon us. During the hours leading up to the Day 1 opening, Kevin Durant had formally requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets.
There was speculation about Duran’t trade request would impact potential decisions from teams with their use of assets and salary-cap space. Kyrie Irving’s future with the organization appears to be over as well as the pair of stars now are at the forefront of NBA trade rumors.
There were a lot of discussions that seemed to take place well before the actual start of free agency. Most notably, Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks seemingly already had a four-year contract lined and the scheduling of a meeting with the Dallas Mavericks all for it to get canceled was just part of the charade.
There has been no shortage of players who have already committed to contracts, whether to re-sign with their current team or for a change of scenery. Among the surprises was Luguentz Dort receiving a five-year, $87.5M contract extension. He was set to reach restricted free agency but the Oklahoma City Thunder got a deal out of the way before that happened.

A few solid veteran role players like Kyle Anderson (Minnesota Timberwolves), PJ Tucker (Philadelphia 76ers), Isaiah Hartenstein (New York Knicks), and Malik Monk (Sacramento Kings) to name a few, signed with new teams. Each player appears to have received a fair valued contract while others like JaVale McGee (Dallas Mavericks) may have been overpaid.
