The Miami Heat proved the haters wrong last season. Despite making it all the way to the Finals in 2019-2020, where they took the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers to six games despite missing young star center Bam Adebayo and veteran point guard Goran Dragic for multiple games, the NBA world didn’t expect the Heat to be among the cream of the crop in the Eastern Conference last season.

A pivotal reason for the Heat’s success was the strong play of Sixth Man of the Year Tyler Herro. He’s set to be rewarded for it soon. According to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer, they have every intention of extending the former Kentucky Wildcat:

Early indications are Tyler Herro’s extension with Miami will settle around $25 million in average annual value.

Defying expectations, the Heat, led by Jimmy Butler, Bam, and newly acquired Kyle Lowry, battled their way through injuries and COVID-19 health and safety protocols to clinch the best overall record in their conference, the number one seed, and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs.

Once there, they cruised through the postseason up until the Eastern Conference Finals, only losing three games en route to their matchup with the Boston Celtics. While Miami ultimately faltered in seven games, they came within one unfortunate miss on a pull-up 3-pointer from Butler of making their second Finals in three seasons.

Like in 2019-20, a big part of their stunning success was due to wunderkind, Tyler Herro. Herro has steadily proven himself to be one of the brightest young players in the league and continues to improve year in and year out.

Last season, he put out his best campaign yet, winning the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award by notching 20.7 points, four assists, and five rebounds in a shade under 33 minutes per game coming off of the pine for the Heat.

Tyler Herro struggled with injuries throughout Miami’s postseason run, essentially missing the Heat’s last four games, three of which they dropped to the Boston Celtics. Regardless of his clearly hampered production in the playoffs, Herro has earned a long-term future with the Heat, and Miami would be wise to lock him down.
