The Toronto Raptors appear to be ahead of schedule in terms of their rebuild. After toiling through a miserable 2020-21 NBA season that saw them notching just a 27-45 record and the 12th seed in the conference, the Raptors were able to completely turn their fortunes around in one offseason.

The main reasons for their improvement from the 2020-21 season though were Scottie Barnes — who was their selection with the fourth-overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, their reward for the dutiful tanking they endured — and the improved plays of Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet.

According to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer, the Raptors know how imperative it is to retain the former Wichita State Shocker. They are gaining momentum toward a contract four-year contract extension that could reach the $100 million threshold.

Toronto and Fred VanVleet appear headed towards a contract extension that could approach four years and over $110 million, sources told B/R.

They did so despite finally parting ways with their long-time franchise point guard, Kyle Lowry. In exchange for signing and trading him to the Miami Heat, Toronto added veteran playmaker, Goran Dragic, and young, energetic big man, Precious Achiuwa.

While Dragic never appeared in a game for the young Raps, Achiuwa’s presence played a big part in the Raptors’ quicker-than-expected turnaround.

Siakam struggled alongside the Raptors in the 2020-2021 season, with his efficiency taking a steep dive as he took the reins as Toronto’s requisite first option. Fans and analysts lost faith in Spicy P, but he was able to regain their admiration by putting together a stellar campaign last season that earned him an All-NBA Third Team nod.

FVV wasn’t as consistent as Siakam last year but was equally important to their success. While Spicy P was still returning to form in the early season, VanVleet put the team on his back with outrageous scoring performances with even more impressive efficiency. While his numbers eventually returned to Earth, he proved that he can be a top option in this league.
