Whenever a star player becomes available, the New York Knicks are seemingly always listed as a potential landing spot. They are used as leverage more often than not, but eventually, they will break through and acquire a player to whom they are linked.
New York is desperate for a point guard this offseason as their duo of Kemba Walker and Derrick Rose was unable to get the job done last season. They combined to play in only 63 games and Walker was traded on draft night to the Detroit Pistons.
The New York Knicks have been stockpiling assets under Leon Rose and Dejounte Murray is the exact kind of player they have been waiting to acquire. While a lot of people have linked them to Jalen Brunson, who would also be an upgrade, they should be looking into the possibility of acquiring Murray.
Murray may not have the scoring mentality that Brunson does, but he is further along in his playmaking development. The lack of structure offensively was evident with a wing in Alec Burks running the point more often than not, something Murray would instantly change.

Murray is also an elite defender. Putting him at the top of the Knicks’ defense with RJ Barrett on the wing and potentially Mitchell Robinson as the last line of defense will make New York very difficult to score on. His presence will also make it easier to hide someone such as Evan Fournier, who isn’t a strong defender.
The high asking price is one that the New York Knicks can meet should they choose to. They have four first-round picks in the 2023 NBA Draft. They own the ones from the Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, and Washington Wizards, and their own. A 2025 first-round pick from the Milwaukee Bucks was also acquired during the draft, as the Knicks also have all of their own first-rounders.
