Brooklyn Nets’ Nicolas Claxton To Re-Sign In Free Agency?

Just a few days ago, the Brooklyn Nets were on the brink of some major roster changes. With Kyrie Irving’s future with the franchise hanging in the balance, so too was the future of Kevin Durant. The two decided to team up with each other in 2019 but just three NBA seasons later, it looked as if that partnership could be coming to an end.

Irving and the team came to an impasse with his contract negotiations. Brooklyn was unwilling to sign him to a long-term contract, so he began canvassing the league for other opportunities. The Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers were all mentioned as potential landing spots.

Reports surfaced that Durant was monitoring the situation, as his next step would be determined by what happened with Irving. Ultimately, nothing came to fruition. Irving was the first to blink, seeing that his prospects were not bright. So, he opted in to his contract for the 2022-23 season, keeping him and Durant in Brooklyn for at least one more season.

With that situation ironed out, it is now time for Sean Marks and the front office to get to work on filling the roster out around them. One player that the Nets sound like they will be retaining is restricted free agent center, Nicolas Claxton.

According to Brian Windhorst on “The Hoop Collective” podcast, it seems like a done deal that Claxton will be returning to the Nets.

“The word is amongst executives… I talked to a couple executives today who believe that Nick Claxton that he’ll be back with the with the Nets, that’s been worked out. Or I shouldn’t say it’s been worked out: there’s an understanding.”

There were some rumblings earlier in the offseason that Claxton could be on his way out of town. As a restricted free agent, the Nets can match any offer sheet that he receives, but he was a prime sign-and-trade candidate for the Nets to recoup some assets.

Now, with the update from Windhorst, it sounds like they would rather keep Claxton in the mix, which is a good decision. He played well last season and provides the Nets with a presence on the interior with his above-the-rim play on offense with shot-blocking and rebounding defensively.

With two stars in Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, the Brooklyn Nets need more players that can make an impact without having the ball in their hands much in the way that Nicolas Claxton can.
