The defending champion Golden State Warriors have a great core in place. Which led them to their fourth NBA title in eight seasons. But, the unsung hero of the Warriors, especially in the playoffs was center Kevon Looney.
The former first-round pick is now set to enter unrestricted free agency. Although, Golden State has no interest in letting him leave. There was chatter a few weeks back that a handful of teams would be interested in signing Looney.
As Marc Stein reported, there is ‘growing pessimism’ around the NBA that Kevon Looney is going to depart from the Golden State Warriors. Instead, he’s expected to sign a multiyear deal to stay with the team long-term.
“There is growing pessimism, league sources say, among teams interested in pursuing Kevon Looney about the ability to pry Looney away from the newly minted champions in Golden State. Looney is increasingly expected to re-sign with the Warriors on a multiyear deal after playing a vital role in their fourth title run in a span of eight seasons.”

While Looney only stands at 6’9″ he was a menace on the boards throughout the playoffs. As you can see above, he led the playoffs in offensive rebounds and he led the Warriors in rebounds per game with 7.6. The former UCLA Bruin is also durable. He played in all 104 of the Warriors games this past year which is unheard of in today’s NBA.
The Warriors are expected to have James Wiseman back next season, so the duo of Wiseman and Looney will be very good for a Golden State team that needs some center depth. Looney also holds his own defensively, which was key during the Warriors’ playoff run.
