Kevin Durant Considering Leaving Nets, Kyrie Irving Could Seek Trade

The Brooklyn Nets could be in for a busier NBA offseason than they were anticipating. They knew that they were going to have their hands full with the Kyrie Irving situation, which had a lot of layers to it.

Irving and the team are reportedly at an impasse when it comes to his future with the team. He has a player option for the 2022-23 season that he has yet to make a decision on. Whether or not he accepts it, the Nets don’t have any plans of signing him to a long-term contract.

Brooklyn taking that stance is understandable as they have been unable to rely on Irving since he joined the team three seasons ago. He has played in only 103 games, missing time because of injuries, taking time to handle some social issues and not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Nets took a hard stance with Irving, which many people agreed with. But, there were some risks to doing that and they are now seeing it first-hand. With how close Irving and Kevin Durant are, Brooklyn knew they were toeing a thin line and they may have fallen off of it.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, Durant is now considering a move away from the Nets as he considers his options and monitors the situation between Irving and the team. If Durant is having any hesitations, it would open the door for Irving to find a new home via a sign-and-trade.

If Durant hits the trade market, there will be plenty of teams that will make calls to the Nets to negotiate a deal. Brooklyn would assuredly be able to get more in a return package for Durant than for Kyrie Irving, who comes with a lot more red flags.

Durant is still capable of carrying a team when need be, as he was routinely the only player that the Nets could rely on the last two seasons when he was healthy. It would be a huge blow to have to trade Durant, as the Nets would go from being title contenders to rebuilding in a year.
