As a general rule, if you see different iterations of a similar trade package regularly proposed, it probably makes some sense.
This deal is no exception. It’s been proposed before. It might just leave both teams in a better position than they were in before.
If any team in the NBA could use a defensive anchor, it may be the Atlanta Hawks. After all, their offensive system revolves entirely around Trae Young. He’s brilliant on that end of the floor, but he’s also a major defensive liability.
Nobody’s more qualified to clean up his mistakes than Gobert. Meanwhile, this deal could allow the Utah Jazz to stay competitive, and more significantly, retain Donovan Mitchell. It makes them deeper and more well-rounded.

If this group clicks, it could stay near the top of the Eastern Conference. If it doesn’t, at least Collins is still young enough to be part of a rebuild for the Utah Jazz.
