Here, the Portland Trail Blazers decide to move on from their franchise player Damian Lillard rather than part with such a significant amount of draft capital.

They still have to give up their upcoming number seven selection. In a vacuum, Lillard for Gilgeous-Alexander is not fair value considering the discrepancy in their age. Still, this trade allows the Blazers to bring in a new franchise player while also holding onto most of the draft picks they’ll need to build around him.

Meanwhile, the New York Knicks finally land their star point guard. It feels like they’ve been linked to so many over the years that it’s hard to believe they haven’t landed one yet.

At the same time, they may determine that it’s not worth it. They’re parting with a lot of draft capital to acquire the aging Lillard here. Does he move the needle enough for them in the present to make such a sacrifice to their future?
