How This Trade Impacts Sacramento
The Sacramento Kings are dead set on acquiring more established talent this offseason as they aim to snap their 16-year playoff drought. A deal like this one with the Atlanta Hawks would certainly help them on that quest.
John Collins is a very good player that is only scratching the surface of his potential. We have seen a glimpse of what he is capable of, as he averaged 21.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game during the 2019-20 season. But, he has seen his opportunities lessen since then as Trae Young dominates the ball and they haven’t always seen eye-to-eye.
The Kings would have some issues defensively pairing Collins with Domantas Sabonis, but that would be a very talented offensive frontcourt duo. Their skill sets are a good match for each other as Collins is capable of stepping out and knocking down 3-pointers and can play well above the rim.
The cost of acquiring him also isn’t very steep. Harrison Barnes is someone that Sacramento is open to moving and Maurice Harkless is used to help get the salaries closer together. Both of those players are on expiring deals, while Collins has four seasons remaining on his.

That is reflective in the price, as the Kings are sending the 37th pick and a future lottery-protected first to Hawks along with Barnes and Harkless.
