Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers do this deal out of sheer desperation. With an aging LeBron James still producing at a high level, they need to win now at all costs.

This deal should help them do that. Malcolm Brogdon is a huge upgrade from Westbrook. His ability to space the floor makes him a better fit alongside James, and he’s generally a much better decision-maker.

For that matter, so is TJ McConnell. He’ll be a high-end backup floor general for this team. With this deal, the Lakers make a dramatic improvement at point guard, turning a position of weakness into a position of strength.

Again: it’s hard to believe we’re saying that about the team losing Russell Westbrook. None of this should be an excuse to relitigate his career.
