Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
The Phoenix Suns do this deal because it’s better than losing Deandre Ayton for nothing. If nobody else offers them a better package, their hands will be tied when it comes to this trade.
It’s an unfortunate situation. A number one overall pick is supposed to be a long-term cornerstone. It is exceedingly rare that they don’t stay with the team that drafted them past their rookie contract.
Still, that appears to be an inevitability here. If the bridges between the player and the organization are burned beyond repair here, the Suns are at least getting some value for Ayton.
Vucevic ought to replace him in the starting lineup from day one. Granted, he’s a far weaker interior presence on both ends of the floor, but he is at least a floor spacer. He’ll add a new wrinkle to this Suns attack with his ability to shoot threes.
