It is anyone’s guess what the Los Angeles Lakers are going to do with their roster this offseason. After a disappointing 2021-22 NBA season, the roster needs some major changes to get the team back on track.

While it seems evident that the Big 3 of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook was a failed experiment, it sounds as if the franchise is going to run it back with those three again. While many people see this as a mistake, the Lakers seem intent on making it work.

If that is what they decide to do, they need to target specific types of players. Spacing is key if they want any chance of making that trio work, as all three of James, Davis and Westbrook operate best when closer to the basket.

Flooding the roster with 3-point shooters and versatile defenders has led to plenty of success for teams with James on it, but for some reason, the Los Angeles Lakers got away from that last season. This offseason, it is time to get back on course, even more so because that kind of player is needed around Westbrook for him to succeed.

One player that should squarely be on the team’s radar is Gary Harris. One former NBA executive that spoke to NBA Analysis Network believes he is an intriguing target for the purple and gold.

“It sounds like the Lakers want to keep Russell Westbrook. Adding more 3-and-Ds will be really important this offseason. I like Gary Harris as an option for them depending on how his market ends up looking. He’s a versatile defender and can hit open shots. That’s just about all they need next to three stars.”

That would certainly check all of the boxes for the kind of player that the Lakers are looking for. Gary Harris got things back on track this past season after struggling with his 3-point shot for three seasons between the Denver Nuggets and Magic.

Harris’ market this offseason should be relatively strong. Every contender will have him on their radar as they look to bolster their wing rotations for the upcoming season. The Lakers will have to provide him with something that sticks out from the other teams. Could a starting spot do the trick?

Gary Harris would be looking at a big role in the team’s rotation as Los Angeles is lacking 3-and-D options. That could be enough to get him to sign on the dotted line as long as a team with cap space doesn’t blow away the Los Angeles Lakers’ offer using whatever exceptions they have at their disposal.
