Wizards Expected To Trade 10th Pick For Proven Point Guard

Washington Wizards, NBA Trade Rumors

There may not be a team in the NBA that needs backcourt help as much as the Washington Wizards. That need could become even bigger depending on what happens with Bradley Beal this offseason.

Beal has a player option for the 2022-23 season that many expect him to decline. That would make him an unrestricted free agent where he could cash in on a lucrative, long-term contract. At this point, no one knows if he would re-sign with the Wizards or look elsewhere, as winning is the No. 1 goal for Beal.

If he feels that can occur in Washington, he will re-up with them. If he doesn’t feel that Washington provides him the best chance to win, he will look elsewhere. The 2022 NBA Draft will be the first chance that the Washington Wizards have to show Beal that they can build a winner around him.

Finding a point guard would certainly help the situation. Armed with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Washington is reportedly making that pick available in hopes of landing a proven backcourt player.

Washington currently doesn’t have a point guard with a guaranteed contract on the roster. Ish Smith’s contract isn’t fully guaranteed for the 2022-23 season. The other point guards from last season, Raul Neto and Tomas Satoransky are both free agents this summer.

While the team may feel comfortable retaining one or two of them, all three players are likely better suited to be backup point guards. The Wizards should be looking for a starting-caliber player to pair with Beal in the backcourt.

Malcolm Brogdon is one player that could fit the bill, as his two-way play and versatility would pair nicely with Beal. Jalen Brunson would be a nice fit in the backcourt as well if Washington could convince the Dallas Mavericks to engage in sign-and-trade talks.

If the Washington Wizards are looking to make a blockbuster and take a big swing, Kyrie Irving of the Brooklyn Nets is someone to look into. Brooklyn is reportedly unwilling to give Irving a long-term deal, which is understandable. If Washington is willing to take the risk, Irving and Beal would become arguably the most dynamic offensive backcourt in the NBA.
