Why The LA Clippers Do The Deal
This trade is certainly an upside swing for the LA Clippers. Russell Westbrook is likely to either make them a lot better or a lot worse.
It feels fair to say that this Clippers team is better equipped to incorporate his play. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George are both more effective off-ball threats than LeBron James, if less masterful with the rock in their hands. They’ll space the floor for Westbrook’s relentless drives to the basket.
That’s not to say that this team is perfectly built for Westbrook. Ivica Zubac could be an issue. We know Westbrook operates best with four-out spacing.
Sharing the dunker spot with a traditional big like Zubac in halfcourt sets may not be ideal.
On the other hand, the LA Clippers’ small-ball lineups featuring Nic Batum at the 5 could be lethal with Westbrook running point. If this team could acquire a stretch big man following a Westbrook acquisition, they could be a better team in 2022-23.
Can the same be said of the Los Angeles Lakers following this deal?
