If you’re a fan of a team that Daryl Morey is the general manager of, we hope you don’t love building through the NBA Draft. Odds are, he’s going to be trading your first-round picks.
There’s merit in Morey’s philosophy. If your team is contending, the goal should always be to acquire talented players who are ready to contribute now. What’s the point of welcoming rookies into the fold when you could trade them to rebuilding teams with quality veterans to spare?
This summer, most expect Morey to use his Philadelphia 76ers’ No. 23 pick and Danny Green’s contract to upgrade their roster. Unfortunately, Green suffered an injury in this year’s playoffs that is likely to keep him on the shelf through most of 2022-23.
The Sixers are well-equipped with stars. Assuming they retain James Harden, he, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey figure to be the focal points of this group’s offense next year.
