The Minnesota Timberwolves made the NBA postseason this year for the first time since 2017 and things are looking up. They have a great young duo in Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns to build the roster up around.

Minnesota isn’t going to rest on its laurels, as they want to continue pushing the franchise forward. Surprisingly, one area where they look like they will make a change this offseason is the point guard spot.

The team signed Patrick Beverley to a one-year extension and has D’Angelo Russell on the roster still as well. Despite that, over at The Ringer, Kevin O’Connor has the Timberwolves selecting Kentucky point guard TyTy Washington with the 19th overall pick in his latest mock draft

Part of the reasoning for that mock selection is that the team is shopping Russell in trade talks.

“D’Angelo Russell is being shopped around, so it makes sense for the Timberwolves to target a shot-creator with this selection. TyTy and Karl-Anthony Towns could make for a lethal pick-and-roll pairing, and with Anthony Edwards resembling a superstar in the playoffs (and in Hustle) Minnesota would be equipped with a dynamic offense. Whatever Russell would return in a trade could only bolster their roster even more.”

Russell struggled at times last season with his jump shot. While he has made strides as a defender and playmaker, it sounds as if Minnesota is ready to move on from him, as he enters the final season of his contract.

There are a number of teams that need some help in the backcourt this offseason. The New York Knicks desperately need a starting point guard, but they could very well wait until free agency begins, as they have been heavily linked to Jalen Brunson.

The Washington Wizards need a point guard, but they have reportedly already ruled out making a run for Russell. The LA Clippers could use another ball-handler and would make for an intriguing landing spot as they are looking to contend this upcoming season.

In a return package for him, the Minnesota Timberwolves will likely be looking for help at the forward spots. They could use another 3-and-D wing to pair with Edwards out there. An upgrade alongside Towns at the power forward spot is also something they have sought in previous offseasons.
