How This Trade Impacts Detroit Pistons
The Detroit Pistons love Jerami Grant and the feeling is mutual. They don’t want to part ways, but it is what could be best for both parties. The Pistons aren’t in a position to sign Grant to the extension that he wants as it doesn’t fit their rebuild timeline. So, they put him on the trade block and get the best deal possible.
This offer from the New Orleans Pelicans could be in line with what they are looking for. They are getting the No. 8 overall pick, a player in Jaxson Hayes that can address their need in the middle, and sharpshooter Devonte’ Graham who provides much-needed spacing.
Any moves that the Pistons make this offseason should have Cade Cunningham in mind. He is the face of the franchise and they need to build the roster up around him and his unique skill set. Both Hayes and Graham are good fits for his style of play.
Both players are good sweeteners to this package, but the crown jewel is the 8th overall pick. That provides Detroit another chance at adding an impact player in the lottery if they choose to hold onto the selection.

It also helps them bolster a trade package should they look to move up the draft board. The Pistons finished the regular season with the third-worst record in the NBA but fell to No. 5 in the draft. If they want to get into the top three, they could have enough ammunition to do so with two top-eight picks at their disposal.
While this trade may make the Pistons worse in the short-term, as Grant is their best player, long-term they can put themselves in a much stronger position to succeed.
