If you asked people around basketball how they thought NBA All-Star Zach LaVine’s summer would go this year, many would say it would be an uneventful one. He would re-sign with the Chicago Bulls on a max deal as the team was aggressive in upgrading the roster around him.

Nikola Vucevic, Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso, and DeMar DeRozan were all added to the core of LaVine, Coby White, and Patrick Williams at the 2021 trade deadline and 2021 offseason in free agency. The Bulls have a talented group around LaVine and it resulted in a 46-win season.

While things didn’t go as planned in the postseason, it seemed like a shoo-in that LaVine would be returning to Chicago with unfinished business. However, that no longer seems to be a shut and closed case. Marc Stein recently shared an update on his Substack.

“Sources nonetheless maintain that one option already being weighed by team brass is the prospect of joining the sign-and-trade bidding for the Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine, amid a growing belief around the league that LaVine, as he heads into free agency, has more interest in leaving Chicago than initially presumed.”

The team brass that he is making mention of is the Dallas Mavericks. In addition to that blurb about LaVine, Stein shared that the Mavericks are dead set on adding a second All-Star to the mix this offseason to pair with Luka Doncic and LaVine could be their target.

Capped out, the Mavericks would have to work out a sign-and-trade deal with the Bulls to land LaVine. What could that trade look like? Let’s take a look at this hypothetical deal that would result in LaVine ending up in Dallas.
