As Gregg Popovich’s storied NBA coaching career comes to a close, it’s hard to anticipate where his San Antonio Spurs are heading.
They’ve been running on the NBA’s dreaded mediocrity treadmill for the past few seasons. The Spurs have missed the playoffs in each of those seasons, but they’ve come too close to making them to procure a top-five draft pick.
Many would have these Spurs pick a direction and stick with it. Their roster construction does lend itself to a rebuild. Most of the top players on this team are 25 or under. Jakob Poeltl, at 26, is the lone and narrow exception.
Moving up in the 2022 NBA Draft would go a long way towards strengthening the Spurs’ youth movement. As it stands, they’re poised to select ninth.

They’ve got ample ammunition to offer a deal that improves their positioning should they choose to do so. They haven’t picked inside the top 10 since 1997 when they landed Tim Duncan. Moving up could offer a rare opportunity.
