San Antonio Spurs Among Potential Collin Sexton Free Agency Suitors

This offseason could be a big one for the San Antonio Spurs. They are stuck in the dreaded middle land of the NBA, as they are not good enough to truly be considered contenders, but they aren’t bad enough to land a top pick in the NBA Draft.

This offseason could be when they decide which direction they want to go in. Do they want to push to upgrade the roster, fill needs and make a run at the postseason? Or will they accept the reality of having to rebuild, trading some of their established players away for more assets to restock for the future?

This is a roster with some intriguing players on it. Dejounte Murray made his first All-Star game, Jakob Poeltl came into his own and Keldon Johnson was part of Team USA’s gold medal-winning roster. No one would blame them if they felt the young guys on the roster are just scratching the surface of their potential and they opted to see how high they can do.

If that is the route they take, finding a bonafide go-to scorer should be atop their to-do list this offseason. They have been linked to Zach LaVine of the Chicago Bulls for that exact role. As one of the few teams that can easily clear max cap space, they can pursue virtually anyone they want in free agency.

Another name to keep an eye on is Collin Sexton of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The restricted free agent reportedly has fans in the San Antonio Spurs front office, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

“The Spurs, who sources say have some Sexton fans in their front office, fit those same parameters — if they’re looking for a new Dejounte Murray running mate.”

Sexton’s future in Cleveland is up in the air as the team played very well after he suffered a meniscus injury that kept him sidelined for the season after playing in only 11 games. However, this is a player that averaged an efficient 23.4 points per game when he was healthy during the 2020-21 season.

He would make for a good backcourt running mate, as the strengths of Sexton and Murray mesh well. The shortcomings that Sexton has as a playmaker and defender would be covered by Murray, who excels in those areas.

While not in the same tier as someone such as Zach LaVine, Collin Sexton would come cheaper. That would enable the San Antonio Spurs to use resources elsewhere, continuing to strengthen the roster overall.
