This NBA offseason is going to be an interesting one. There aren’t many teams that have cap space to spend in free agency, which could lead to organizations being able to retain their free agents more than in years past.

However, one team that is looking to spend some money this summer is the Detroit Pistons. Detroit is looking to upgrade the roster around the No. 1 pick from the 2021 NBA Draft, Cade Cunningham, and they have the means to do so.

The Pistons are reportedly looking to bolster their frontcourt and have already been linked to some centers. Mitchell Robinson of the New York Knicks and Deandre Ayton of the Phoenix Suns are who they could target there.

In the backcourt, it is Collin Sexton of the Cleveland Cavaliers that could be of interest to them. The Pistons are the one team that the Cavaliers are wondering about when it comes to their pursuit of retaining Sexton.

“One team the Cavs are internally wondering about, not necessarily what they’re worried about, is the Detroit Pistons. To get some kind of lethal scorer next to Cade Cunningham and take some of the ball-handling responsibilities and pressure off him. My sources tell me the Cavs do not believe there is a team out there that is going to give Collin a contract north of $20 million annually.”

Sexton would be an excellent fit alongside Cunningham, as he averaged 24.3 points per game during the 2020-21 season when he was healthy. He did it efficiently, as well, scoring from every level of the court.

That kind of go-to scoring option is something the Pistons could use more of, as they were 28th in points per game, 29th in shooting percentage and 3-point percentage, and 28th in offensive rating. Sexton would help turn those numbers around instantly, fitting well into the score first, secondary ball-handling and playmaking role.

Given the cap space that they have, the Detroit Pistons are one team that could go above that $20 million mark. Based on what Chris Fedor and Michael Scotto were sharing, that could get the job done in convincing the Cleveland Cavaliers to not match an offer sheet Collins Sexton theoretically could sign with Detroit.
