A lot of attention has been given to the New York Knicks about their need for a point guard this NBA offseason. That has been an issue for years and the team will once again try and address it in the coming weeks.

However, that is far from the only thing that the team will be in search of. New York’s offense saw no real improvements and with the defense worsening, it resulted in a drop down the standings.

This is a roster that needs some work. The front office made some acquisitions last season hoping to improve on their fourth-place finish during the 2020-21 season but the team regressed, finishing in 11th place.

Are the Knicks going to continue building with young players, or are they going to try another quick fix? Toeing the line of both isn’t usually feasible, but some players could be available that would fall into both categories. One of those players is Collin Sexton of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Sexton was mentioned as a hypothetical blockbuster trade option for the Knicks that would shake up the offseason. A package of Evan Fournier and the No. 11 pick in exchange for Sexton, who agrees to a sign-and-trade deal, was suggested. While not a perfect player, Sexton would fill a lot of the needs that New York currently has.

He missed a majority of the 2021-22 season with a torn meniscus but played very well during the 2020-21 season when he was healthy, averaging 23.4 points per game. What makes that scoring output even more impressive is how efficient he was in achieving it with a shooting line of .458/.378/.827.

While he has some shortcomings as a playmaker, that shouldn’t be too much of a deterrent for the Knicks. RJ Barrett and Julius Randle have a lot of the offense run through them and are also capable playmakers. Having multiple players that are capable of running the offense on the court at the same time will help keep the offense moving smoothly.

There are some limitations defensively as well for Sexton, but you never have to worry about his effort level. He brings it every time he steps on the court and if there is any coach that can help him improve on that end of the court, it is Tom Thibodeau.

The New York Knicks have been linked a lot to Jalen Brunson, but it will be difficult to acquire him and very costly. Collin Sexton could come at a fraction of the price and at 23-years old, still has plenty of room for growth in his game.
